Last night we were watching TV and heard an odd sound coming from our garage. We did the usual cat check (both were present and curious) so G and I went to investigate. It only took a few moments for us to think "Small cat? No, it has a rat tail...large rat? No, seems to be off-white...ah, it's an opossum!"
Indeed, it seemed likely that when I had the garage door open to bring in some potted plants to try to protect them from the forecasted frost, an opossum had decided our garage would be a good place to keep warm. We got out a couple of brooms, opened doors, shuffled things and tried to get him to go back out, but first he retreated into the lawn mower bag, then chose to dive behind the large pile of Stuff, from which it's virtually impossible to chase out a small furry creature. So we shrugged philosophically, removed the cat food, bird seed, bulbs, energy bars and boxes of crackers on lower shelves of the pantry, and anything else we thought likely to be a target for a hungry opossum, and went to bed.
Today we're going to open the side door in the hope that he'll move on within the next couple of days. If he gets troublesome we'll rent a trap, but for now he's just a lucky critter. :-)
